ATEX and Electrical Systems – Selection, Design and Installation

Working with electrical systems in hazardous areas requires more than a basic understanding of ATEX. Whether you are designing electrical systems or installing Ex-certified equipment, it is essential to understand how hazardous area classification influences the selection of equipment and components. Incorrect choices can have serious consequences, affecting both safety and operational reliability.

This course provides the knowledge you need to select the correct electrical equipment for ATEX-classified areas, interpret hazardous area classifications, and properly document your equipment selections in accordance with SS-EN 60079-14. The focus is on giving you practical tools and knowledge that can be applied directly in engineering, design, and installation work, whether in the office or in the field.

The course is primarily intended for professionals responsible for the selection, installation, and documentation of Ex equipment, rather than those who work inside hazardous areas on a daily basis.

The goal

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Clearly interpret hazardous area classifications and understand their impact on the selection of electrical equipment.
  • Select the appropriate Ex equipment based on applicable standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Document equipment selections and engineering decisions in accordance with SS-EN 60079-14.
  • Perform calculations for intrinsically safe circuits (Ex i).
  • Understand the differences between various explosion protection concepts and methods.
  • Avoid common mistakes in the design and installation of electrical systems in hazardous areas.

The target group

This course is designed for:

  • Electrical engineers who design electrical systems for ATEX hazardous areas.
  • Industrial electricians who install and work with Ex-certified equipment.
  • Project managers involved in electrical installations and process industries.
  • Technical managers and others responsible for electrical installations or the selection of equipment for hazardous areas.

The topics covered

  • Fundamentals of ATEX and explosion hazards: What is an explosive atmosphere and how does it occur?
  • Hazardous area classification and its impact on equipment selection: Zone 0, 1, and 2 for gases, and Zone 20, 21, and 22 for combustible dusts.
  • Electrical ignition sources and protection concepts: Ex d (flameproof enclosure), Ex e (increased safety), Ex i (intrinsic safety), Ex p (pressurized enclosure), and other relevant protection types (Ex m, Ex t, Ex q, etc.).
  • Selection of Ex-certified electrical equipment in accordance with SS-EN 60079-14.
  • Documentation requirements and key standards, including ELSÄK-FS 2016:5 for electrical installations in hazardous areas and AFS 2023:7.
  • Advanced intrinsic safety (Ex i): How to calculate and document intrinsically safe systems.
  • Practical exercises: Interpreting hazardous area classifications and selecting appropriate Ex-certified equipment for different scenarios.
  • Discussions: Common pitfalls and mistakes in the design and installation of electrical systems in hazardous areas.
