ESA 2026-new rules, new training programs, and what this means for you

In June 2026, EBR ESA 2026 comes into force. It is the biggest update to the electrical safety instructions in many years and affects both the training structure and how the existing ESA certificate continues to apply.

For those of you who work at or near electrical installations, or who are responsible for staff who do so, it is important to understand what is changing, which training programs are affected, and what measures are required.

Why is EBR ESA 2026 being introduced?

Electrical safety efforts within EBR have been evaluated and adjusted over several years to better reflect today’s work environments. ESA is now being updated in conjunction with the release of a new edition of the European standard for the operation of electrical installations.
At the same time, Energiföretagen Sverige, together with the industry, has reviewed the content, structure, and training programs to establish:

  • clearer responsibilities and roles
  • a more uniform training structure
  • better support for how the work actually looks in practice

As always, the focus is on reducing risks and preventing accidents when working on and around electrical installations.

Quick overview—here’s what you need to do

Do you have a valid ESA certificate that expires after May 31, 2026?

Anyone with an ESA certificate that is still valid after May 31, 2026, must complete an upgrade course to maintain the certificate’s validity.

The free online course is provided by Energiföretagen and covers what’s new in ESA 2026 and how the changes affect roles, responsibilities, and work practices.

Read more about the refresher course here.

Are you an employer or responsible for training?

Then it’s time to review your training plan for 2026 and ensure that all roles are matched to the correct ESA training.

What does ESA 2026 mean for organizations?

For most companies, the transition isn’t about entirely new training requirements, but rather about structure, supplementation, and planning.
As an employer, you should:

  • ensure that affected staff complete the upgrade course on time
  • verify that the correct ESA training is linked to the correct job role
  • document training and valid certificates
  • plan training initiatives for the long term

New EBR ESA certification

Starting June 1, 2026, the new EBR ESA certification concept will be launched. This means that training, certification, and administration will be updated and modernized.

For you as a participant, this will be evident, among other things, through:

  • updated and more pedagogically sound training materials
  • a common structure and consistent terminology across the industry
  • digital certificates that make it easier to track validity

Starting with ESA 2026, Energiföretagen will no longer sell online courses directly. Instead, you’ll be able to purchase training courses through approved training providers such as Trainor.

How ESA training courses are changing

In conjunction with ESA 2026, the training offerings will also be updated. Some courses will be renamed, while others will be merged. Below you can see what applies to some of the ESA training courses offered by Trainor.

EBR ESA Elektriskt arbete

Boka EBR ESA Elektriskt arbete
Boka EBR ESA Elektriskt arbete - repetition

EBR ESA Instruerad person

Tidigare: ESA-E2 Icke elektriskt arbete

Tidigare: ESA-E3 Röjning i ledningsgata

Boka EBR ESA Industri
