The goal

After completing this comprehensive course, you will have the basic competence to perform road work, operate road maintenance vehicles, work as a traffic controller, and participate in tasks involving traffic management systems.

The target group

The course is suitable for those who work as:

  • Surveyors
  • Operators of road maintenance vehicles such as snowplows, salt spreaders, sand spreaders, and for those using service vehicles and performing planning tasks, as well as those carrying out intermittent work on low- and medium-class roads.
  • Paving crew members.
  • Assistants to personnel with Step 2 requirements, such as pilot vehicle drivers, etc.
  • Traffic controllers and those who also perform pilot driving.
  • Drivers of their own road maintenance vehicles.

The topics covered

The course is divided into three parts:

  • Step 1.1 – General Basic Competence
  • Step 1.2 – Basic Competence for Operating Road Maintenance Vehicles
  • Step 1.3 – Basic Competence for Performing Road Work

The course provides you with general basic competence regarding applicable laws and regulations for individuals performing road work, as well as how to apply safety regulations in the workplace.

Key topics include:

  • Relevant sections of the Work Environment Act and its regulations (AFS).
  • General knowledge of the Traffic Ordinance, Road Sign Ordinance, and their regulations, with specific focus on rules relevant to the execution of road work.
  • Understanding instructions communicated by personnel with Step 2 competence.
  • Safe road maintenance work and transportation.
  • Traffic management systems permitted on road maintenance vehicles and signage trailers.
  • Risks associated with passing traffic.
  • Personal protective equipment.

You will also learn about the connection between traffic-disruptive work and the road user’s need for traffic safety and accessibility, as well as how to create a safe work environment.
