What is APL?

Studying is one thing, but working in the real world is something else entirely. Work-based learning (APL) gives students practical experience and a deeper understanding of the profession. At Trainor, APL accounts for about 15% of the program and is a crucial component where students develop their skills and gain insight into workplace procedures, safety regulations, and the culture of collaboration. By hosting an APL student, you’re helping to build the future of the electrical industry. You’ll make a difference for an individual, for your company, and for the entire industry.

Taking on interns will always take time, but it will pay off in the end. After all, who knows - you might be welcoming your next colleague, and an intern who feels well-received will also speak highly of the company to friends and family, which will ultimately lead to more business.

Who are our students?

Every year, we train about 300 adult students to become electricians. They often have prior work experience, a strong work ethic, and a strong desire to establish themselves in the industry. Our students choose specializations such as installation, industry, distribution, or automation - and most of them go straight into the workforce.

Our educations

Automation electrician

If you’re interested in working with automated equipment, there’s a growing need for skilled professionals with the right expertise. In addition to the manufacturing sector, you can also work in building automation, in sales, service, or as a consultant in the automation industry.

Distribution electrician

As a distribution electrician, your job is to ensure that the electricity generated at power plants reaches customers. A distribution electrician works on the construction, repair, and maintenance of the power grids that supply the community with electricity.

Industrial electrician

This education will equip you with the knowledge needed to work with control and automation technology in the industrial sector. Some common job responsibilities include servicing, maintaining, and commissioning electrical and automation equipment.

Installation electrician

This is our most comprehensive education, offering you the opportunity to pursue a varied career. As an installation electrician, you’ll work on new construction projects, in private homes, or in industrial settings.

Alarm and security electrician

If you want to work installing data and telecommunications equipment, burglar and fire alarms, or access control systems, this is the program you're looking for.

Guidance is the key

By introducing, guiding, and including the student, you build both professional skills and a sense of community in the workplace. A well-executed APL fosters engagement and motivation and can help you discover future talent.

Trainor uses the APL app, which makes mentoring simple and seamless. You track the student’s progress, provide feedback, and verify attendance—all digitally and efficiently.
